Mission
The mission of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Team Submarine (TSUB) is to keep America’s Navy #1 by delivering and sustaining reliable and affordable undersea warfare capabilities and readiness to the Navy fleet. The TSUB vision is to exercise rigor, innovation, and sustainment to maintain readiness and the U.S. Navy’s undersea superiority.
About the Lab
Team Submarine is located within NAVSEA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. and is comprised of Program Executive Office (PEO) Strategic Submarine (PEO SSBN), PEO Attack Submarines (PEO SSN), PEO Undersea Warfare Systems (PEO UWS) and the Direct Reporting Program Office, AUKUS Integration & Acquisition Office (AUKUS I&A). The Team Submarine concept divides the single submarine-centric organization into specific PEOs with the goal of enhancing the structures and processes in the submarine research, development, acquisition, and maintenance communities. Team Submarine provides exceptional communication among the various offices that contribute to the overall success of the United States Submarine Force. Overall goals for TSUB include maintaining continuous strategic deterrence by delivering the Columbia-class submarine on time at an affordable budget; sustaining the Ohio-class submarine through the end of life; maximizing warfighting availability and lethality of undersea forces; and delivering undersea dominance. Additional goals include executing the Virginia-class submarine recovery plan to sustain two per year; increase undersea force Operational Availability (Ao); drive affordability into all submarine classes’ lifecycle sustainment plans; and expand investments to maximize the rapid fielding of transforming sensors, weapons, and payloads through the full spectrum of warfare. TSUB works to integrate warfare in a secure, cyber resilient, and common architecture by executing Submarine Warfare Federated Tactical Systems (SWFTS) modernization.
What is unique about this lab?
Are you ready to support the #1 Navy in the world? Join Team Submarine, a mission-focused, innovative organization prioritizing you and your career aspirations. Learn how the team manages and builds submarines from both the program management and technical perspectives.
As an intern, you will work from the Team Submarine lab headquarters in Washington, D.C. to contribute to enhancing the structures and processes in submarine research, development, acquisition, and maintenance. Interns receive first-hand exposure to engineering development programs and projects, life cycle engineering concepts and principles, and operating procedures and problem-solving.
Join us to interact with both civilian and military leadership across the various program offices to understand the strategic efforts enabling the continual, cutting-edge lethality of the United States Submarine Force. You’ll also get a chance to visit and tour submarine training and maintenance facilities to see first-hand the silent force behind the fleet supporting the #1 Navy in the world!
About the Internship
Summer interns are provided with an environment to foster creativity, develop a problem-solving mindset, and participate in meaningful technical research. Additionally, they will gain experience in a professional workplace that specializes in STEM careers.
Become a beacon of excellence while serving the silent force behind our Fleet. Here at Team Submarine, we uphold a standard of excellence. We are seeking motivated students with an interest in expanding their knowledge and developing their hands-on experience in science, technology, and engineering, who can champion our values, transform our future, and blaze their own trail. We’re looking for the next generation of highly skilled and technical professionals who want to build a career in a specialized workforce of mission-focused service.

What will I learn as an intern at this lab?
NREIP participants will have the opportunity to shadow a team of engineers and/or managers and get exposed to as many technical areas as possible. You will be able to review and provide support, but the intention is to focus on the exposure to all the work being done by the team.
What kinds of projects do interns at this lab participate in?
- Support the development, acquisition, modernization, logistics and maintenance of the world’s best Submarines and Undersea Systems and its Submarine Industrial Base.
- Collaborate with Senior Engineers to plan, coordinate, and conduct various engineering development programs and projects that involve systems modification, systems requirement evaluation, and systems performance analysis
- Apply advanced concepts, principles, and processes for life cycle engineering of various systems, subsystems, equipment, and procedures for assigned areas of responsibility
- Trouble-shoot, analyze, and determine operating problems and recommend appropriate changes to correct deficiencies
- Provide technical and professional engineering advice and guidance to supervisors and supporting staff members
- Contribute to discussions around the planning, development, and execution of assigned Navy projects/programs, including OPNAV, Fleet Activities, other NAVSEA technical and program management codes, planning yards, shipyard, Navy field activities, academia and laboratories, and numerous manufacturing, engineering, and support contractors
- Support all matters pertaining to the Ohio-class maintenance program, which includes a Class Maintenance Plan (CMP) and a maintenance strategy. A CMP consists of organizational, intermediate and depot level (O-, I, and D-Level) maintenance requirements and is the basis for establishing prescribed OPCYCLEs. CMPs are engineered based on the designed service life of systems and components of each class of submarine. Also provide support on all certification efforts, including Submarine Safety (SUBSAFE), following complex availabilities to return Ohio Class submarines back to the fleet.
- Perform market research and analysis on current and anticipated mission needs for TSUB, including development, maintenance, modernization, and operational readiness, and identify opportunities for applying new technologies and strategies to meet those needs.
